CHAPTER SIXTEEN
I see Andrea off at the landing strip in Golfito. It is surrounded by large mountains that are in a U-shape. The plane goes to the end of the runway at the apex of the U-shape and revs its motors to take off. I get a brief view of Andrea as the plane lifts off the ground. Then there is my long haul to the city of San José. And I feel like a breath of fresh air seeing all the beautiful blue and other multicolored butterflies and hearing the monkeys in the trees again sounding like they are dogs barking. I find a place to stay in a village at dusk and grab a bite. I walk close to the front door of a small house. The door is thrown open and a woman jets out screaming and she runs into me, while she is in a frantic state of mind. I look through the doorway and see a man on the ground. I enter the house with the woman trailing behind me. Her husband is on the floor with both his hands wrapped around his throat and his eyes are like saucers. Their three kids are shrieking I glance the table and it looks like they were eating pork. I gather the man up on his feet and stand behind him to do a Heimlich maneuver. I put my hands on his gut, holding my wrist with my hand and I pull hard. A piece of pork comes flying out of his mouth and he gasps for air. He is bluish in the face and within a minute or two he regains his normal color. The woman speaks so fast in Spanish that I canât understand her, but I clearly see the gratitude in her face. The man goes to shake my hand and then I surprised that he gives me a bear hug. The children gather around, hugging my legs and waist. They offer me food and I say that I have just eaten, and then a cold beer materializes that I donât refuse. We sit down and talk and I explain that when eating any kind of meat that you have to chew it very carefully. This seemed to be a new concept for them. I finish the conversation by the same time I finish the beer and I say goodnight. The man could have died, if I had not been at the exact moment the woman bolted out the door.
In the morning I will put in a lot of miles and will arrive day-after-tomorrow to meet Andrea. I see three men with machetes blocking the primitive roadway I am navigating on. I solidly hate the idea of being robbed or abused in anyway. I stop about fifteen feet in front of the men who are gesturing. I get the picture that this is a heist. I refused to be victimized and I was naïve to the fact that this could happen to me in Costa Rica, though criminals exist worldwide.
